Happy Tuesday!

Do you think what you wear on the court matters? “Pickleball Core,” the newest trend in fashion, is taking inspiration from the pickleball court. Major designers are getting in on the action with colorful pickleball-inspired collections. 👗However, the USA Pickleball Board of Directors is in the final stages of the 2023 rules change process. Could the sport soon see rules limiting the fun colors and patterns of pickleball paddles associated with “Pickleball Core”? 🤔

Now, let's dive straight into your pickleball tips, strategies, stories, news, and more... 👏

#1. WHAT IS “UNCALCULATED PICKLEBALL” & HOW IT WILL HELP YOU WIN MORE POINTS

Tyson McGuffin recently won his first first triple crown 👑 at the 2023 Tournament of Champions after staging a comeback. He attributed his and partner James Ignatowich's turnaround to playing “uncalculated pickleball.” So, what is “uncalculated pickleball”? And, why should you consider adapting this strategy to your pickleball game?

#2. MURMURS FROM THE LOSERS’ BRACKET: TAKING THE FIRST SERVE… OR NOT

If given a choice between picking a side of the court or serving at 0-0-2, what’s the smartest option? It’s a tricky choice, and one with an answer you might find surprising. 🤔

#3. WHAT IS SWING WEIGHT & TWIST WEIGHT ON YOUR PICKLEBALL PADDLE & WHY IT MATTERS

We are all on the hunt for the perfect paddle for our own respective pickleball game. Fortunately, as the sport of pickleball has evolved, the paddle options for players to choose from has exploded. 💥 However, with so many options, it can be difficult to choose a paddle from the sea of options. Considering swing weight and twist weight can help you narrow your choices when “weighing your options” on which paddle to play with. ⚖️

Selkirk Sport, the leading name in Pickleball, and Legends, the athlete-favorite apparel brand, have come together to create the Selkirk x Legends Capsule Collection. 🙌This special collection is designed for the modern pickleball player. Born out of a mutual appreciation for the game and a shared commitment to providing athletes with game-changing performance gear, the Selkirk x Legends Capsule Collection features an industry leading paddle along with shorts and a crew that are designed to perform. 💪

#4. WILL YOUR PICKLEBALL PADDLE COLOR BE REGULATED IN 2024?

Since the sport of pickleball can happen in fractions of a second, in fast exchanges at the Kitchen line, the slightest advantage—like difficulty discerning the pickleball against a similar color paddle—can make a big difference. The 2023 rules change process is in its final stages and currently being finalized with the USA Pickleball Board of Directors. Will a decision be made to address the appropriate color for pickleball paddles? ⚪️🟡🟠

#5. GAMBLING TAKES TO THE PICKLEBALL COURT

The Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour has made history by becoming the first-ever pickleball organization to enter the sports betting market. They have partnered with FanDuel Sportsbook to allow fans from 10 legalized betting states in the U.S. and one Canadian province to place bets on PPA Tour events, starting with the PPA Kansas City Open. 🎰

#6. QUICK TIP – MOVE YOUR FEET

One of the top tips to help improve your pickleball game is to move your feet. Generally speaking, moving your feet means positioning your lower body to be behind the pickleball, so that you can set up your shot from the ground up. In other words, by positioning yourself behind the pickleball you will strike the ball out in front of your body (and without over-extending your reach)—which will help you hit the best shot possible. 🎯 Plus, you will be able to generate more power on your shots, as well as more easily prepare for your next shot and stay as balanced as possible.

Bottom line – Move your feet! 👣

#7. RULES REFRESH – WHO IS AT FAULT?

By Mark Peifer, USA Pickleball Certified Referee; Past Chairman, USA Pickleball Rules Committee

Let’s consider the non-officiated scenario where you hit the ball to your opponent across the net and you are convinced the ball bounced twice before your opponent hit the ball. They hit the ball back to you, whereupon you catch the ball and call a fault on your opponent for the double bounce. What is the rule that governs this situation? 🤔

This situation highlights one of the fundamental rules of pickleball that all players must know to eliminate on court disputes. The rule is 13.D.1.d; “For non-officiated matches, if a player believes an opponent has committed any type of fault other than a service or non-volley zone foot fault as noted in Section 7 – Fault Rules, they may mention the specific fault to the opponent(s), but they have no authority to enforce the fault. The final decision on fault resolution belongs to the player that allegedly committed the fault.

Therefore, in the scenario above, the fault would be on you for stopping play. 🛑 See Rule 7.I.

#8. YOUR OPPONENTS ARE BACK ON THE PICKLEBALL COURT. NOW, WHAT?

Imagine you are on the court. You and your partner work to get the Kitchen line while keeping your opponents back near the baseline. ✋ You and your partner have full control of the Kitchen line. Your opponents continue to scramble at the baseline and are staying back. What should you do?

#9. TOUR WARS: COMPLETE CHAOS BREAKS OUT IN PRO PICKLEBALL

What is happening in pro pickleball?!

In one word: Chaos.

In a few words: The tentative merger negotiated in 2022 between two major entities in professional pickleball—the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) and Major League Pickleball (MLP)—has fallen apart in dramatic fashion. While this “tour war” has provided financial security for pro players, it has also led to uncertainty, upheaval, and rifts in the industry. 🤯
