#4. WHAT IS STACKING, PLUS WHEN & WHY DO IT

What Is Stacking in Pickleball, Plus When & Why to Do It | Pickler Pickleball
โ€‹

Stacking is a strategy that is used to keep each partner on a doubles pickleball team on their respective preferred side of the court. In other words, after the serve or return of serve (as applicable), you and your partner can avoid switching sides and stay on the same side of the pickleball court throughout the game.

#8. HEADLINES FROM THE COURT

Headlines from the Pickleball Court | Pickler Pickleball
โ€‹

Serving up your pickleball headlines... ๐Ÿ—ž

  • One measure of interest in pickleball is how much people are searching for it on the world wide web. Based on Google searches for the word "pickleball" (depicted below), the sport has had hockey-stick-like growth over the last decade. ๐Ÿ“ˆ
โ€‹
  • Another measure of growth of the sport could be based on your circle of friends. Does everybody you know now play pickleball (like one player from New Hampshire, and like us)? If not, it may be time to teach them (and be like the "Pickleball Pimp" of Northern California). The visionary behind Major League Pickleball, Steve Kuhn, has a goal of there being 40 million pickleball players by 2030. The only way we get there is by sharing the sport we love with others. ๐Ÿค
  • More celebrities are getting in on the action, too, as Dr. McDreamy, Hermione from the Harry Potter series, singer Maren Morris (who has dubbed pickleball the official sport of her tour), and favorite tight end to Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, all love to play pickleball. And, pickleball is rapidly becoming a must-have amenity to the 1%. However, it is also the game of the people, as pickleball can transcend age, gender, socio-economic status, physical ability, geography, etc. Shoutout to Special Olympics Ontario, who held its first-ever pickleball tournament recently. ๐Ÿ‘
  • Because of this growth, there has been some tension between pickleball players and tennis players across the country, as they vie for court space. These players are spending a ton of time and effort advocating for their respective cause. Is there a way to bridge the divide? Could pickleball and tennis players have a mutually beneficial relationship and live in harmony? Could the relationship be like ski and snowboard, which both exist and thrive? Time will tell, but there are already steps being taken to bring the two sports together ๐Ÿค (as evidenced by the Tennis Channel and Tennis Magazine taking on a small roll to promote pickleball, and change the narrative between pickleball and tennis players, in conjunction with the PPA Tour).
  • โ€‹NFL star TJ Watt admits pickleball is a very underrated sport after getting beat by a suburban mom, who had no idea who he (or his teammates) were. His pickleball experience went viral, particularly after his brother, JJ Watt, questioned his pickleball skills and challenged him to a sibling match...
โ€‹
  • Interesting and relatable quote from a pickleball player in a Yahoo sports article on pickleball: Well, when I play, I feel like I'm on a vacation. That's really what it is. Yeah, it is my vacation every day. โ˜€๏ธ

#9. RULES REFRESH - MASTER YOUR FOOTWORK

The Erne is an increasingly popular shot on the pickleball courts. An Erne is an advanced shot where you jump or run around the Kitchen and make contact with the pickleball to the side of the Kitchen and close to the net. But, with the rise in popularity of the Erne, also comes the rise in foot fault violations ๐Ÿฆถ, like the one by Wesley Burrows at the PPA Orange County Cup in the video below.

video preview

If you are working on your Erne skills, remember that all volleys (which includes all Ernes) must be executed outside of the Non-Volley Zone. You may jump over the Non-Volley Zone, as long as you do not touch the Non-Volley Zone line or the Non-Volley Zone surface area, or, if you touch the Non-Volley Zone, then you must re-establish your feet outside of the Non-Volley Zone before hitting your Erne. So, be aware of your feet ๐Ÿ‘ฃ on your Erne attempts. Consider practicing your footwork with drills to help enforce muscle memory of where your feet need to be to stay out of the Kitchen.

For a deeper breakdown on all of the rules of pickleball, check out Pickler's Ultimate Guide to the Rules of Pickleball.

#10. ASK PICKLER - WHAT SHOT SHOULD I HIT?

Pickler Pickleball
โ€‹

Question: I'm having trouble with a particular shot, which is when my partner and I are playing defense on the baseline and our opponents are at the Kitchen line and decide to cut drop to the shallow sideline. I can dig out the ball, but, I'm at a loss of which shot to play. What shot should be played here? ๐Ÿค”

Pickler Pickleball
โ€‹

Answer: Good question. These are tough shots to track down and then even tougher to recover from, as you may be out of position from your momentum carrying you forward through the court. With that said, you have a few options ๐Ÿ’ช here:

  1. Crosscourt or middle dink - This is probably the safest / low risk option if you can keep it low. Before you hit your shot, try to steady yourself (you typically have more time than you think on the pickleball court). By going crosscourt or down the middle, you will give yourself a little extra time to try to recover and get back into position (as opposed to a down the line dink). A down the middle dink may cause your opponents to fight over it and will give your opponents less angles to attack. This will help your partner, who needs to move over to the middle of the court and try to cover the court for one or two shots, while you get back into position.
  2. A very high lob - The second option is to throw up a lob. This may be impossible if the ball is very close to the net. However, if you have some room, throw up a lob. Instead of trying to keep the lob deep in the court, focus more on putting height onto the pickleball. In other words, hit the pickleball very high (but still in the court - think middle to back of the court). By hitting the pickleball very high, you will give yourself time to get back in position. Plus, many players are uncomfortable with a very high overhead, so they may even make an unforced error.
  3. Hit a body shot - This last option is high risk, but could be high reward. You could try to catch your opponents off guard with a body shot / chicken wing shot, by hitting a hard speed up right at them from on the run. This is high risk because if you miss, the pickleball is likely going out of bounds, and if your opponents are not caught off guard, but are ready for it, then it could be an easy block winner.

#11. QUICK TIP: WATCH THE BALL INTENTLY

Check out this point in the video below ๐Ÿ‘‡ between Lee Whitwell (representing the Florida Smash team from Major League Pickleball) and Rob Cassidy (representing the Chimeras team).

video preview

It is not too often that a player completely swings and misses ๐Ÿ’จ, but it can happen - even at the highest pro levels, like it did for Cassidy. This is a good reminder that the easiest way to reduce your unforced errors is to simply watch the ball. It's simple, but it's true and it works! Watch the pickleball all the way to your paddle. If you pull your eyes off of the ball too quickly, you will pull your head, upper body, and paddle off of the ball and certainly get a mishit, or even a complete whiff, as a result. ๐Ÿ‘€
